Characteristics of Achromobacter xylosoxidans bacteremia in northern Taiwan.
There were 40 cases of Achromobacter xylosoxidans bacteremia during a 6-year period in a medical center in northern Taiwan. Males outnumbered females (72.5% vs 27.5%). A case of community-acquired Achromobacter xylosoxidans bacteremia in a patient with metastatic breast carcinoma is described. The patient's home drinking water was identified as the source of her bacteremia. The case represents the first in which a community-acquired infection due to this organism has been attributed to a documented water source.

Infections caused by Achromobacter xylosoxidans cause significant morbidity and mortality in debilitated individuals. Eradication of these infections requires prolonged therapy with antimicrobial agents and removal of any infected central venous catheter. The outcome is usually poor in patients with high risk malignancy, septic complications, and/or multi-organ dysfunction.
